Ponneri Town Panchayat Office of Thiruvallur District is about 60kms away from the District Head Quarters Thiruvallur and 37 kms away from Chennai. It lies in the North west of Tamil Nadu.
As per the G.O.No.2449 Dated 21.02.1952 it had been upgraded as Town Panchayat Grade – II . Then it was upgraded as Grade I Town Panchayat in 1963. and upgraded as Selection Town Panchayat as per The Director of Town Panchayat letter No : 1953/82, dated 24.02.1982.
There are 18 wards with a population of more than 40,000. Courts, Government Colleges, Government Hospitals are functioning in the Town. Nearly 20,000 & above floating population visit Ponneri daily.
The name ‘Ponneri’ itself has an history behind it. It was said that once in river by name as Aranya River ( Arani River, Near Ponneri) the playing children found a Golden Plough í an instrument used in Agriculture for ploughing the land named in Tamil ‘ER Kalappas’. Since it is Golden (in Tamil ‘PON’) Pon-Golden + ‘ER’ - Plough together resulted PONN-ER-I.
In This Town Panchayat, one Govt. Arts & Science College, two Higher Secondary Schools, 10 and above Matric Schools are function for the residents of Ponneri to get quality & valuable education. ‘Fisheries Research University’ is under Construction now at Ponneri, by Fisheries Department of Tamil Nadu Government.

The above temple is an ancient & historical Temple. It lies in the river beds of Arani River. Agathiya Mamunivar who is one of the most popular Rishis Visited this temple once and made Pooja here. Hence it is named so to take the history to the world. ‘Thirukkulam’ a divine pond is there infront of this Temple, named ‘Ananda Pushkarani’. The Speciality of this pond is even during the hottest Summer the water level won’t go down when it happens everywhere. More than 5000 People Come to this temple to make Poojas during important days & Occasions.
‘Kari Krishna Perumal Temple’ is one of the most famous temple. It was built by ‘Triumvirs’ the rulers of Tamil Nadu, Karikala Chola in Ponneri. During the month of ‘Chithirai’(April in English) ‘Bhrammotchavam’ takes place. To the south of this temple is ‘Pushkarani’ the temple pond. The God shiva of this temple in the form of Lingam (in Tamil) is a suyambu Lingam (Which means it came out by itself) and Considered as a sacred and powerful.
‘A MEET BETWEEN HARI & HARAN’ is the beauty & Speciality of this temple which takes place once in a year. This is an important occasion not only for ponneri but also entire Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated for 15 days and ends with the temple CHARIOT Procession. More than 15000 & People visit the temple on this day.
This temple was built during the period of King. This temple is located by name Chinnakavanam village which is in the Ponneri Town Panchayat.
An History behind it :
It is said that, the Great Rishi, Agathya Mamunivar was about to make 108 Lingams to Conduct Shiva Pooja. At that time he forgot to make Vinayaga Pooja. Hence all the 108 Lingams Joined together & became Vinayagar. That reputed & Peculiar Vinayagar is here in this temple.
A Strange tree has in this temple. It is ‘ER AZHINJAL TREE’ in which the fruit when fell down from the Tree in few hours these fruits Stick back to the same tree. This is an unseen wonder or happening in the world. Many researchers come to this temple to crack the nut of the above.
The above wonder invites many from different directions of our State. It baffles everyone.
Shri Ramalinga Swamy Adigal is popularly known and called as ‘Adigalar’ among the people. It is believed that our Adigalar ended up his life reaching the feet of God in the form of divine light. His mother’s house is in Ponneri. He was born and brought up here up to six years.
Here, we have a built a temple and making poojas and preaching his Principles such as avoid taking flesh, treating all the life’s & so on. In addition to it, we provide ‘Anna Dhanam’ lunch to the worshippers and followers of our temple.
